Christie's Auctions Talley Collection
by Yvonne Heinen-Foudeh, Senior International Correspondent
Christie's auction house is offering the collection of legendary fashion editor André Leon Talley at auction. The pieces have been up for bid in a series of live and online auctions since January 27. Talley was the first black man to become the creative director of American Vogue. His extensive collection includes haute couture, handbags, jewelry, literature, and decorative art
"André Leon Talley's fashion sense was unique and timeless. He was categorically chic, and the collection he assembled over the course of his life was unlike any other,” said Elizabeth Seigel, Head of Private and Iconic at Christie’s. “From monogrammed Louis Vuitton suitcases to custom Tom Ford caftans, each piece is imbued with meaning and connected to his larger-than-life personality and legacy."
The collection is both glamourous and intimate, reflecting his decades-long relationships with fellow icons including Karl Lagerfeld, Diane von Furstenberg, Ralph Rucci, Tom Ford, Diana Vreeland, and Anna Wintour.
Proceeds from the live and online auctions will benefit the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York and Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina; both of which were close to Mr. Talley’s heart.
The Collection of André Leon Talley will be sold in a live sale on the 15th of February and an online sale from January 27 – February 16, 2023. A selection of highlights will begin a global tour in Palm Beach, from January 18 to 28; continue in Paris, from January 19 to 24; and conclude in New York in advance of the sale.
