Generative AI is About Augmentation
by Frank Henderson, President of Henderson Sewing Machine Co.
Generative AI, also known as Generative Artificial Intelligence, is a branch of AI that focuses on creating new content, like text, images, music, audio, and even videos. It's like a creative machine that can learn from massive datasets of existing content and use that knowledge to generate something entirely new.
Generative AI is about augmentation, not replacement. It's not about getting rid of the people in your organization and replacing them with computers. It's about making jobs easier. When you're thinking about Generative AI, a great way to think about it is: What would I do if I had 1,000 free interns? What could I do? You could, for example, email all of your best customers and thank them for being a customer, giving them coupons or something. That can be automated with Generative AI.
What's interesting, if you had a bunch of interns, is that they're smart, but they're not experts – that's the way Generative AI is. It's really smart, but it's not quite an expert yet. It can help you do the things that you're doing today much more efficiently. Customer service chatbots are another great use of Generative AI. Building an employee knowledge base so that your employees can get answers to their questions and be able to help customers more readily is a great area as well.
Overall, generative AI is a rapidly evolving field with the potential to revolutionize many aspects of our lives. It's important to be aware of both its potential benefits and limitations as it continues to develop.
